Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers—often called HVACR technicians—work on heating, ventilation, cooling and refrigeration systems that control the temperature and air quality in buildings.
Heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers typically do the following:
- Install, clean, and maintain HVACR systems
- Install electrical components and wiring
- Inspect and test HVACR systems and components
- Discuss system malfunctions with customers
- Repair or replace worn or defective parts

The A.A.S. Stationary Engineer Program at Moraine Valley prepares students for a career in the industrial maintenance mechanics field. Any of the heating and air conditioning certificates will count as credit toward this degree.
Stationary engineers service air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems in industrial and commercial buildings. As a stationary engineer, your job is to maintain the ventilation, heating, and air conditioning systems in structures like malls, warehouses or manufacturing plants. You will monitor and control the operation of boilers, chillers, condensers and other machinery used in these temperature control systems. You also may be called upon to repair worn-out bearings or replace corroded gaskets. Day-to-day responsibilities may include testing the water circulating through a boiler or air conditioning system and checking to make sure equipment is functioning properly.
Employment of stationary engineers and boiler operators is projected to grow 5 percent from 2016 to 2026, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Those with apprenticeship training should have the best job opportunities.
